Mycale

“I’m out. Shit.”

Mycale glanced at the empty weapon in his hand while a stray, white-smoke plume danced away from the still-hot barrel. He was pinned down inside of one of the bedrooms with no weapons.

Tap!

Two shots came from the open doorway, and he ducked beside the bed, pinned between it and the wall behind him. If he didn’t return fire, it would reveal his vulnerable state.

He unfolded from his crouching position and lobbed the empty gun at the doorway. It flew through the opening and thudded against the white wall of the hallway, leaving a black mark.

He was fresh out of physical weapons, but there was one thing left in his arsenal. His rage. He inhaled a deep breath and gathered his rage and strength into a metaphysical ball in his head.

He accidentally unleashed his rage when he was a kid during his kidnapping to protect others. Destruction beyond repair was the result of his actions. Add the fact that he never again heard from the other kids until he saw Sori, he was afraid to ever trust the beast living inside him again.

What would happen if he unleashed his rage now? More bullets sprayed the area of the wall behind him and punched into the mattress and box spring he hid behind. He was fresh out of choices if he was going to save himself.

When the man stepped into the doorway and lifted his weapon to fire at him, Mycale released every bit of pent-up anger he was holding onto for months. The raging heat flowing from him left a sonic pop behind. A blazing ball the size of a basketball struck the man in the center of his chest.

Mycale swallowed a large lump of fear mixed with unbridled excitement at the sight of the man disintegrating into an explosion of burning embers that flew through the air like confetti.

The second man stepped in during the first one’s burning transition. He didn’t wait for Mycale to do the same to him. He released a hailstorm of bullets.

Thump.

Pop. Pop. Pop.

The impact of each bullet struck Mycale with maximum force, sending him staggering back.

Why hadn’t he fallen? Where was the pain? The blood?

There was a barely discernible glow around him. His rage. Was it protecting him? He didn’t know he could do that since he hadn’t called on his ability for fear it would do more harm than good.

The man emptied one clip of bullets into him before drawing a second weapon and aiming. His face contorted in anger at his inability to take Mycale out. He even lifted and peered down at the weapon.

Mycale inhaled and released a second ball of rage. Like the first man, this one was bathed in fire before he was burned to smothering ashes. Maybe he wasn’t as cursed as he led himself to believe all these years. Maybe the beast he was feeding pain and adrenaline-fueled stunts wasn’t the vicious monster he assumed he couldn’t control.

More hired assassins continued to come for him, intent on ending his life.
